The Heritage of Hurley

History enthusiasts will find much to your liking in the Hurley area. Iron County was designated a state Heritage Area. Genealogists will also find the helpful, friendly county officials ready to assist you in your family tree research.

The Hurley area is rich with history, from 19th century mining and logging to remnants of the roaring twenties that included Hurley's rejection of alcohol prohibition and entertaining of Chicago's darkest figures like Al & Ralph Capone, John Dillinger and Baby Face Nelson.

And no above ground archeological expedition would be complete without exploring the Flambeau Trail. This route served as a key transportation route for Native Americans centuries before Europeans arrived on the scene. Much of the inland trail cuts north to south through Iron County as it served to connect important settlements on Madeline Island in Lake Superior with Lac du Flambeau in the south.
