Discover the Geologic Story of Copper Falls State Park

Saturday, September 26, 2026 | 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.

MELLEN, Wis. — Back by popular demand, geologist Tom Fitz, PhD, will return to Copper Falls State Park for an engaging presentation and guided walk exploring the remarkable geological history of the park.

The program will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Historic Pavilion near the Doughboys’ Trail. Fitz will introduce participants to the ancient forces and geological processes that shaped the park’s dramatic landscape. Following the talk, he will lead a walk along the Doughboys’ Trail, pointing out interesting and significant geological features along the way.

Fitz is affiliated with the University of Minnesota Duluth Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and previously served in the Geology Department at Northland College. His knowledge and enthusiasm make the geological story of Copper Falls both understandable and fascinating.

Participants should dress appropriately for the walk and changing weather conditions. Pets are not permitted at this program site.

The event is free and open to the public. A Wisconsin State Park admission pass is required for all vehicles entering Copper Falls State Park.
