Business Spotlights

Business Name: Harmel's Bear Den 🐻 (Motel & Bar)
Owners : Dennis & Janice Harmel
620 US-51 Hurley, WI
715-561-3085
1. ❓"What year did you start and why?"
πŸ’¬2006. Labor Day weekend of 2005 was when we went to go look at the place and decided we wanted it. My wife’s dream was always to own a bar/restaurant and "the wife gets what she wants,” said Dennis.
2. ❓"What is the main goal of your business?"
πŸ’¬ The goal was always to try to make a go of it and make it work.
Now as they have reached retirement age, the goal is to sell it.
3. ❓"What makes your business unique?"
πŸ’¬ "It’s me," said Dennis. But also, "we are on the outskirts of Hurley, right on the trails, this is not downtown Hurley.”
4. ❓"What is the hardest part of your job and how do you handle it?"
πŸ’¬Long hours. β€œYou gotta do what you gotta do and are in it for the duration, that’s what I would tell all potential bar owners if you are going to make it," said Dennis.
5. ❓"How can people support you?"
πŸ’¬"Buy more beer!"
Some fun little facts βœ… : Before the Harmel's bought the place it was called the Starlite Motel. The motel itself was built in 1956 and the bar came later in 1966. Dennis said the "Den" part of the business name describes the motel half of the business. To this day prices to stay at the motel are reasonable starting at $50/night for a single room (one person), $60 for 2 people in a single room, $70 for a double room and two people and just $10/person after that. An added bonus is being directly on the trail making it a perfect option for atv/utv/snowmobilers wanting to be just on the edge of town.
If a person wants to book a room they must call 715-561-3085.
Chamber Member Business : Hitt's Fine Furniture - Ironwood
Owner : Mary Hitt
128 E. Aurora St. Ironwood, MI; (906)-932-4400
❓1. What year did you start and why?
βœ…We opened in April 2001 in Ironwood, MI and then April 2008 in Ashland, WI. We had an opportunity to purchase the Ironwood building, which was occupied at the time. When it became vacant, we decided to open a furniture store. The owner of the Ashland store location was retiring and approached us to consider purchasing the building. We were considering an expansion, somehow, and the 40 minute distance between the two locations seemed to be a good fit.
❓2. What is the main goal of your business?
βœ… To provide quality products for folks to live in their spaces - home, work, cabin, etc.
❓3. What makes your business unique?
βœ… We try to treat all people who walk in our doors as if they were friends or family. We want to respect them, appreciate them, and help them to the best of our ability. We also advocate with our manufacturers and vendors for our customers. We try to purchase as much US made products, and real wood products. We establish relationships with our customers and also with our various vendors, manufacturers, and trucking firms.
❓4. What is the hardest part of your job and how do you handle it?
βœ… Finding enough hours in the day. I just let go at the end of the day, and remind myself that tomorrow is another day.
❓5. How can people support you?
βœ…Treat my people with respect and courtesy to make their jobs easier, and express your satisfaction with us - a note, a call, or a quick word in the grocery store goes a long way!
