Delve into the Wonders of Bird Migration with Fe University
The turn of the great wheel of seasons has brought September’s peak of the late songbird migration, and the start of the fall waterfowl migration. There’s no better time to learn more about the phenomenon and then venture out to observe it in action – and Fe University is offering the opportunity to do just that, with an overnight birding trip to Horicon Marsh, prefaced by a free presentation on migration!
On Tuesday, Sept. 22, naturalist and master wordsmith John Bates will present “Stitching Continents Together: The Phenomenon of Bird Migration” at the Mercer Community Center. This free (donation requested) presentation will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. In northern Wisconsin, the fierce winters force most breeding birds to seek warmer climes or risk death. Where do they go? How do they navigate? What are the risks? Where can you witness some of the greatest migrations in action? Come gain a deeper insight and appreciation for the wonders of migration! The next day, set off for a brief migration of your own in Fe University’s Sept. 23-24 field trip to Horicon Marsh to observe a good variety of migrating birds. This overnight excursion, with a registration fee of $45, features an evening dinner at a local restaurant with a presentation by well-known naturalist Bill Volkert, and a half-day morning auto and walking tour of the Marsh in search of birds with Volkert. There’s the opportunity to take an optional one-hour boat tour for an additional $22.50, too! This overnight trip is limited to 25 participants, and few spots remain, so act fast!
