Introduction to Relief Printing (Age 7-Adult)
Relief printing dates back thousands of years — Chinese woodblock printing goes back to at least the 7th century AD. In Europe, woodcuts became central to book illustration and the spread of information after Gutenberg. Artists like Albrecht Dürer, Hokusai, and later Picasso used the medium to great effect.
Come prepared with a 4×6″ drawing that we will draw on our relief blocks. From there, we will carve our blocks. You will learn how to ink a plate, how to mix and prepare the ink for printing, how to print your block and how to sign your prints.
A baren will be available to transfer the ink to paper but a wooden spoon is recommended becuase it works well.
Please bring to class:
– Existing 4″x6″ drawing, to server as a base for the relief print
– Wooden spoon (helpful but not required)
